Evolving the Nandi Motif at Devrai Art Village

Evolving the Nandi Motif at Devrai Art Village

Depiction of Bull in the indigenous culture of the subcontinent goes a long way back into antiquity. Even the small terracotta relief of the bull in the Mohenjodaro seal exudes energy and power behind the motif. No wonder that Pashupati, the lord of the animals, later worshipped as Shiva took on the Nandi bull as his vehicle. The Nandi sits facing Shiva Linga in all Shiva temples, lost in adoration, the raw primitive energy channelised into meditative devotion.
We invoke the same primal energy source in creating the Dancing Nandi Motif. The Nandi now, tired of sitting in a meditative 'asana' for thousands of years has got up and dances in a state of total abandon, matching his steps with those of his Dancing Lord Shiva!
And so does the artist Balsingh Katlami who now is standing quietly behind the Nandi installation @devraiartvillage . Balsingh belonging to a very poor Adivasi family from Gadchiroli was a first generation learner. He now is a master craftsman. He joined Devrai Art Village along with his sister Sonaki 6years ago.
